Author Suma Subramaniam Visits Maple Hills
On November 7, students were treated to a visit by author Suma Subramaniam. Suma engaged all the classes by sharing about her Indian heritage, her name, and why she became a children's author (spoiler: because kids are her most favorite people!).
With K-1st, she read The Runaway Dosa (An indian gingerbread story). The students got to join in for parts of it with hand motions and repeated phrases.
During the 2nd-3rd presentation, Suma read Namaste is a Greeting and spent time talking about growth mindset, in addition to learning how to say hello in several languages.
With 4th-5th grades, she read She Sang for India and spent time talking about acceptance, perseverance, and civil rights for women. She also offered an additional, optional writing activity, where students wrote about their interpretation of the heart of the story.
Students from all grades had an enjoyable time, saying, "I liked that. Can she come again?" or "That was so cool, getting to write with her. She was so nice!" One student even added, "I'm Indian, just like her. And we speak the same language!"
Thanks to Suma Subramaniam for making this year's Author Day so fun for our students!
