Maple Hills Community-Wide Mosaic Project

Mosaic art project

In case you missed the news before the end of the school year, the Maple Hills Elementary PTA and art docents hosted an artwalk event to celebrate the school’s young artists as well as a community art project.

“Our fantastic PTA and Art Docents, under the leadership of Amy Nagaichouk, organized a phenomenal event where families could come and enjoy art projects created throughout the year with classroom art docents and even create some of their own art,” Principal JoEllen Tapper said. “Every classroom had an art display and students were excited for families to get to see their creations.”

The Maple Hills PTA applied to the City of Issaquah - Government and won a 2022 Round One Arts Grant.  The city granted $2,500 to help create a community-wide mosaic project using more than 14,000 crayons as the medium, Tapper said.

Artist Suzi Furtwangler, the grandparent of a Maple Hills student, flew in from Michigan to lead the art project.  Furtwangler designed a four-panel piece titled “School Seasons,” and taught the community members how to position the crayons to make the mosaic effect.  In addition, grandparents of another Maple Hills student, who were visiting from Ukraine, helped to build the mosaic frames.

“It was truly a community collaboration. This beautiful mosaic composition will hang in the main hallway of Maple Hills. Stop by to see it sometime!” Tapper said.

Thank you for sharing your art with us, Maple Hills artists, community members and visiting grandparents!
